household tasks
Who is affected ?
employed homeowners face many problems with house hold task as they lack the time and availability do execute them. This can then lead on to effect their mental health as they worry and stress about the simplest of things, distracting them from their job and other priorities in life, therefore leading to an unhealthy lifestyle.
unemployed home owners and stay at home parents find these tasks easier. However 36% of homeowners are over the age of 65 who are likely to sustain health issues or barriers, leading to a simple task to cause stress and take up a lot of time. This can take a mental tole and then lead to other problems socially as they are embarrassed or lack the time.
What are the issues/problems?
Many problems occur with house hold tasks depending on the type of house and person it varies due to the different circumstances. The issues associated with house hold tasks are like many others and cause a chain reaction leading onto other problems.
household tasks such as cooking and cleaning take up lots of time which can be a major problem for many people who lack free time due to their job or taking care of others eg. children.
mental health can be effected by this as people usually delay tasks such as cleaning and then stress about it when finally faced with the challenge. Therefore effecting other factors in life.
social issues can be caused due to lack of time as there is less availability to meet up and see other people. Additionally, many people can become embarrassed and ashamed of their home therefore avoiding people and isolating themselves.
What are the current design solutions to this problem?
As technology has evolved there are now many designs to aid these tasks and to resolve them.
a robotic vacuum cleaner allows people to set up the vacuum which only takes a couple minuets before leaving the vacuum do clean on its own, this is especially useful in larger homes.
a dishwasher cleans the dishes all by its self this saves tones of time and is very effective, however it takes a very long time to clean and only having quite a small space to put in dirty dishes.
a laundry basket allows fro easy usage of transporting dirty washing this is especially useful as it puts the washing in a system and creating space.
aesthetic tasks
Who is affected?
children always love designing and creating things , its just their creative minds. But in a house they have their own room which as they get older they want to design and create a space that reflects them. This however is challenging as a lot of equipment used eg. drill, is very dangerous so they rely on their parents to do it for them, which then limits their personality and the thrill of change.
newer homeowners tend to have a huge transformation of their home as it doesn't feel like them yet. For some it could be their first home so they wish do do whatever they want as before their were restrictions, due to these restrictions they lack the knowledge of how to design their home. For others this may be the last house they ever live in as they want to settle down there so due to this they will put in a lot of effort and money into making it their home.
homeowners who have lived in their home for a while might want to fix up on a few of their designs such as repainting a wall or replacing a broken table which impacts them as instead of becoming a fun optional activity it becomes more of a demanding chore. Many of these home owners may have server health problems such as arthritis restricting them to movement and the ability to fully excite these tasks.
What are the current design solutions to this problem?
paint rollers are used to speed up painting as it covers a much larger surface are than a regular brush and it produces a finer, fresher design. Some of these also come with extended poles to reach higher corners reducing the danger of a ladder.
What are the issues/problems?
demotivation/lack of time can cause sudden stops to these types of tasks as usually they are consider as projects due to the time it fully takes, there are some which take a short time but they are usually put down from dread of a larger task. This then creates a problem as tasks get left half done causing a mess leading to people avoiding such tasks and the process they go through.
danger is a massive issue especially as its the simple things which can cause harm for example hanging a picture frame. These types of tasks such as painting and building furniture aren't usually considered dangerous which reduce the safety implications instead of raising them, especially as many children can have easier access to this equipment.
mental health can also be affected because if people struggle to perform the task they are restricted from expressing themselves and that can lead to things such as depression as they aren't comfortable in their home, supposedly a persons safe space.
functional tasks
Who is affected?
older home owners and people who struggle with simple tasks due to their health are heavily effected, for example people over the age of 65 usually begin to experience health problems due to aging and cant execute movements such as bending down to pick up things and some begin to experience memory loss to these simple tasks which are sometimes overlooked.
children usually receive these tasks as chores and always complain due to the tedium of the task. Adults usually give these tasks to kids as they are very simple allowing them to easily perform them, but due to this the tasks are very boring and need to be bribed with pocket money. These tasks are also given to children as a form of independence and a taste of the real world but they lack the full knowledge and many are to small to do fully for example shorter children cant reach higher shelfs and corners. Plus many products are dangerous for them like weed killer.
What are the current design solutions to this problem?
stool step are use to aid these tasks and increase the depth of the task taken whilst decreasing the time taken, this additionally allows others (smaller people-children) to partake in the task. Now children can reach shelfs once kept out of the way due to safety but now its fine and can be more independent additionally reducing the stress of adults who carry the a lot of weight.
What are the issues/problems?
some tasks are easy quick and simple but many take time, equipment and are always individual to every individual. For a person who owns a large house will oviously require greater depth and time into the once simple tasks eg. cleaning windows requires a lot of water and some may require special tools/equiptment to reach all the windows on the upper levels of the home.
Although i have mentioned this a lot i am going to explain it again due to the fact on how massively this effects homeowners. Sweeping the floor requires lots of movement which many not be accessible or incredibly difficult to others, this task can cause back problems and increase the danger of potential injury due to the wet floor,.
