Structure and Meaning
-
Each chapter has its own style, theme, color, body part, and symbol. Joyce planned every move the characters made as if it were a game of chess. Dublin is not just a setting – it becomes a character itself
-
Ulysses (1922)
-
Ulysses is Joyce’s most important book. It takes place on one single day: June 16, 1904. This date was special to Joyce because it was the day Nora Barnacle showed her love for him.
Bloom walks around Dublin all day, visiting places, talking to people, and thinking deeply. He meets Stephen in the evening, and they talk and return home. Stephen could be like a son to Bloom, but they are too tired and distant
to truly connect.
