Dubliners (1914)
Dubliners is a book of 15 short stories. The stories show how people in Dublin feel stuck in their lives – this is called paralysis. They often dream of escape, but they fail.

Joyce writes in a realistic style but adds deep meaning. His stories often start in the middle of the action (in medias res) and show events from the character’s point of view. He doesn’t judge his characters.
In Eveline, the main character wants to leave her unhappy life but is afraid to change. She remembers her family and cannot move forward. The story shows a common Joyce theme: paralysis vs escape.
Joyce’s Style and Ideas
At first, Joyce wrote in a clear, realistic way (Dubliners), but later his style became more complex. He used:

Most of Joyce’s stories are set in Dublin. He wanted to show real life and the thoughts and feelings of normal people. He used new techniques to show time and inner thoughts. The artist in his books is usually separate from society.
