Stanza 1
'Bentdouble, like old beggars' suggests the weakness of the soldiers and how heavy the bags are that they have to carry. Beggars linked in with them being desperate, dirty and homelessness.
'knock-kneed, coughing like hags' suggests the fear and illness of the soldiers with them 'coughing like hags'
'drunk with fatigue; deaf'' is a metaphor about how the soldiers are falling over with the terrain being muddy and slippery. The deafness suggests that they are oblivious to the war and also the Lies of War.

'Gas! Gas! Quick, boys!' the exclamation marks suggest fear and pain within the soldiers. The repetition suggests that they are trying to get the message over that they need to hurry otherwise they will die

This shows the betrayal that the country has given to its army. Many Young men fell for the propaganda and have now lost their lives.

He fought in the war and died the last week of the war before it ended. 1893-1918. He suffered from PTSD. WW1 is 1914-1918. It is about the horrors of war.
