Foundations of Distance Education
Distance Education is defined by Simonson & Zvacek (2024) as "institution-based, formal education where the learning group is separated, and where interactive telecommunications systems are used to connect learners, resources, and instructors (p. 33)
Asynchronous Distance Learning - Learning
takes place whenever the learner chooses
(Simonson & Zvacek, 2024)
Synchronous Distance Learning - Learning
takes place at the same time but in different places
(Simonson & Zvacek, 2024)
2 Visions for Distance Education
Distance ed. in schools looks like schools rich in technology and students still have a connection to a teacher, it may just be over the internet (Simonson & Zvacek, 2024).
Distance ed. in corporations would reduce the need for travel. Training and conferencing would be done connected by video, audio, and information (Simonson & Zvacek, 2024).
There are both positives and negatives to distance education as reference in the article by
Sirotova & Pies (2023)
Positive Aspects of Distance Education:
More teacher availability
Diversity in education
No limit on place or time
Negative Aspects of Distance Education:
Lack of socialization
Higher likelihood of distractions
Must depend on technology working
Kubikova et al., 2024
discusses different factors that influence student success in distance education.
Contact with the teacher
Adaptation of the student; motivation, study habits, etc.
Teaching methods
According to Simonson & Zvacek (2024), it does not matter if learning is face to face or at a distance as long as these factors are present:
Teacher must have effective instructional strategies.
Courses must be well designed.
Support systems must be in place to make sure the learner has what is necessary to succeed.
Contact between the instructor and the students and between the students themselves must happen regularly
Assessments must be designed to accurately assess the learning outcomes intended for the course.
