How to Form the -ing Verb
Most verbs:
base + ing
work = work
ing
play = play
ing
Verbs ending in -e:
drop the "e" and add -ing
make = mak
ing
write = writ
ing
One-syllable verbs ending in consonant-vowel-consonant:
double the final consonant
run = runn
ing
sit = sitt
ing
Verbs ending in -ie:
change -ie to -y and add -ing
die = dy
ing
lie = ly
ing
Structure of the Present Continuous
Affirmative:
Subject + auxiliary + verb + -ing + complement
Exmaple:
She is
walking
in the park
Negative:
Subject + auxiliary + not + verb + -ing + complement
Example:
She is
not walking
in the park
Interrogative:
Auxiliary + subject + verb + -ing + complement ?
Example:
Is
she
walking
in the park ?
The Present Continuous is used for:
-
Actions happening right now:
She is
reading
a book right now.
-Temporary actions, even if not happening at the exact moment:
I am
studying
English this month.
-Changing situations or developments:
The weather is
getting
colder.
-Planned future actions, especially with time expressions:
We are
meeting
them tomorrow.

When is it NOT used?
It is not used with stative verbs,

believe, understand, remember, need
