SPEECH SUBSYSTEMS
RESPIRATION
-
LUNGS
(organ)
Made up of light, airy tissue
-
-
Boyle's Law = when the volume decreases (lungs contract), the pressure increases, and vice versa.
Equalisation of Pressure = When there's a difference in pressure (e.g., between lungs and outside air), air naturally moves from high to low pressure to balance it out.
BONES
Ribcage protect the lungs, heart, and other vital organs
Thorax which houses the lungs, heart, and other vital organs
Trachea connects the larynx to the bronchi, allows air to pass into the lungs. Also called the windpipe.
(cartilage)
WAYS OF BREATHING
Tidal Breathing is relaxed, rhythmic, quiet, and sinusoidal
- 40% inhalation and 60% exhalation
- Shallow tidal volume (of air) of 0.4-0.5 liters
- Vital capacity = max. amount of air exchangeable
- Inspiratory capacity = tidal volume + inspiratory reserve volume
Speech Breathing is used during speech production
- 25% to 75% of vital capacity
- Very short inhalation (<40%) inhalation and long exhalation
- Very big difference!
SOUNDS
/h/ usually has no constriction, but not in all languages
-
Pulmonic ingressive = air is pushed in (inspiration) from the lungs (Swedish 'ja' and ventriloquist speech)
