Should we use animals for scientific testing? My opinion is NO!
History and Background
Dates back to ancient times with early examples were documented in the writings of the Greeks
in 1998 the UK became the first country to ban animal testing
Early Greek physicians, like Aristotle and Erasistratus, conducted experiments on animals to understand their anatomy and physiology.
Hook
"The question is not, Can they reason? nor, Can they talk? but can they suffer?" - Jeremy Bentham
Over 100 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned, abused, and killed every year in just the USA alone. Do we really think this is ok?
Thesis
Scientific testing on animals should not be allowed because every single year we are harming so many animals who have not done anything wrong and probably just want to live in peace without the pain they are having to go through
Argument #1: The studies are misleading us
Animals don't accurately mimic how the human body and human diseases respond to drugs, chemicals or treatments. Animals are very different from humans and, therefore, react differently.
It seems to us that whatever we are testing the animals for is safe for them but because we are not the same. Some of the things they say are safe cause we tested on animals but they actually are not safe for us as humans
Nine times out of Ten the medicines that appear to be promising in animal studies go on to fail human clinical trials
Argument #2: Wasting Resources
The cost of testing only one medicine on animals exceds around 1 million dollars.
The amount of garbage we are creating on our planet just from animal testing is a lot. When we test on animals scientists use a lot of disposable resources like syringes, gloves, etc.. and large numbers of these things are disposed daily
Safety studies on one drug alone can take around 14 years and it still might not be approved. Think about how many animals could be harmed in that much time for this one product that might not even work for humans.
Argument #2: We are hurting so many animals when there are other options
Over 100 million animals are killed every year
Lots of innocent animals are being killed after being tested so we are able to further examine what the products did to there insides
Instead of harming and hurting all of these animals every year our society is getting so techy with AI and everything it would be so cool if we could further invest all of the money we are losing in this industry in order to finding alternatives to basically killing these poor animals
Specialized Information
Animal testing is hurting animals for beauty products and medications when we have other possible resources we could use
It is very ineffective and we are not even helping our economy because we are losing so much money, resources, and animals
