Different types of paper
Layout paper - It properties are thin translucent paper with a smooth surface - and it's uses are sketching, quick ink, technical drawing, tracing.
Cartridge paper - it properties are off white paper, usually with a slightly textured surface - and it's uses are sketching rendering in pensile and ink.
Tracing paper - It's properties are it is translucent, slightly thinker than layout paper - it's uses are copying images when sketching.
Bleed proof paper - It's properties are similar to cartridge paper but it is bleed-proof so colours don't run - and it's uses are spirit-based marker rendering,
Treated paper - It's properties are plain paper with a clear binder or dye layer applied to help hold the image on the paper surface - and it's uses are photographic printing.
Watercolour paper - It's properties are available in absorbent, smooth, hot - pressed or the more textured cold-pressed and heavily textured rough - and its uses are watercolour painting.
Corrugated car - It's properties are usual with carton board outer layer and a corrugated middle layer, giving the material in the ability to provide protection against impact - and some uses are protective packing and food takeaway packages.
Bleached card - It's properties are chemically treated to brighten the surface to make it suitable for high quality printing - and some of it uses greeting cards, high-quality packaging.
Mount board - It's properties are made from compressed fine cotton fibres to produce a rigid board - and some of it's uses are presenting artwork and picture mounting.

Caracteistics of wood

Seined (air to kiln) to remove excess moisture, 80-90 % before use
Seasoning helps to prevent defects such as twisting, warping, cracks, cupping or bowing; to reduce the time taken to season wood, trees should be peeled in the winter when they grow less, have less sap and therefore contain the least moisture.
Air seasoning is traditional in inexpensive whereas kiln seasoning is expensive, using controlled temperature and humidity levels
Different woods
Hard woods
Oak, Ash, Mahogany, Teak, Birch, Beech
Oak is hard and tough with an attractive grain and is weather resistant. It is used in Furniture flooring and boat building.
Ash is tough with an attractive open grain pattern, which makes it more flexible. It is used to make handles and sports goods.
Soft woods
Pine, Spruce, Douglas fir, Larch, Cedar
Pine has a straight grain, and can contain knots. It is used in construction work.
Spruce wood has a straight grain and is resistant to splitting. It is used in indoor furniture.
Manufactued board
Plywood, Marine plywood, Aeroply, Flexible plywood, Chipboard, MDF
