society changed
so did literature
Writers began to explore new ways of telling stories
Until the early 20th century
novels followed a clear, linear structure
Two major influences on the modern novel were :
new ideas about
the unconscious
time
Modern writers began to focus on
what happens in the mind
They created
new techniques
such as
stream of consciousness
interior monologu
which show the flow of a character's thoughts
Virginia Woolf believed
that novels should reflect
internal experiences
even if they seem
messy
or
disjointed
.
At the beginning of the 20th century
there were two main types of novelists:
Psychological novelists:
Focused on the
characters' inner lives
and
human relationships
.
Modernist novelists:
used
experimental styles
to show thoughts and feelings from the inside
