Products and Processes
Natural Science
-
2) Making/Process - The process of turning a raw material into a product will be explained/shown for better understanding.
Key concept: The natural material recieved from plants need to go through a change to become a usable product. This involves changes from one thing to another and the steps involved to get a final product.
Inquiry-based activity: Learners are taught a sugar science demonstration. They will dip a string into supersaturated sugar solution and leave it over das to form rock candy. questions such as: What are the crystals being formed?
Social Science
1) Community and jobs in production - The roles and people that are involved in the making of the products and they work together.
Key concept: People need to work together in order to make products. This involves different roles like farmers, factory workers, drivers etc. Emphasizing an economic journey and community relationships.
Inquiry-based activity: Learners will be assigned a role player to demonstrate the journey of a product like bread. Some will be farmers, others will be bakers, others truck drivers and others customers. learners will know why each person is needed and ask questions such as: Who made the bread? or Where do farmers get seeds.
2) History of production processes - Looking and comparing at how products were made in the past and comparing them to how they are made today.
Key concept: Change and continuity overtime of the methods of making products. A lot of products were made by hand in the past and are made in factories today.
Inquiry-based activity: Learners will be given pictures to compare the different was from the past to the modern. Pictures with short illustrations will be provided and they will discuss the differences and similarities.
Technology
1) Tools and materials - The different machines, tools, and techniques are examined to see how they are used in the process making stage.
Key concept: Recognizing different tools and how they work. Understanding that each process of product making uses different tools.
Inquiry-based activity: Learners will be provided with a tool and a task and asked to do something with it. The can be provided with an egg-beater and a bowl of water and asked to whisk the air into the water in order to see bubbles. there can be different tools and tasks at different stations which will prompt questions such as: What does this tool help you to do?
