Spanish would only accept a full conversion of devoutness to Catholicism and the total abandonment of traditional religious beliefs and practices.
The failure of total devotion and abandonment of traditional religious practices and beliefs would be deemed "incomplete."
Indigenous Christianity during the colonial period was a syncretic religion (the blending of indigenous customs/practices/beliefs with foreign ones).
"Cult of Saints" refers to how the indigenous treated saint in Native Christianity. Treated each saint like Indigenous gods.
Prayed to saints for certain things, certain gods were associated with certain saints. E.g. Aztec rain god was converted or merged with Saint John.

The Church also supported resettlement or "congregation" of dispersed populations into villages and towns. Made it easier for priests to have more regular and closer contact with the Indigenous to try and convert them to Christianity

Diego de Landa the Bishop of Yucatan was also responsible for one of the most vicious inquisitions, torturing over 4000 Mayan with 158 to death.

The Virgin of Guadalupe ordered Diego to go to the archbishop Juan de Zumarraga to build a temple in her honour on the hills of theTepeyac
Archbishop demands proof so Diego returns to the hills of the Tepeyac and the Virgin of Guadalupe tells him to roll roses in his tilma or poncho. When he returns to the archbishop he unrolls his tilma to an a perfect image of the Virgin of Guadalupe is on the poncho.
