English Speech- Identical Twin stereotypes should be taken seriously.
common stereotypes
oversexualisation
read minds
'can feel each others pain'
'one twin is good, one twin is evil,
carbon copy's of each other
finish each others sentences
having twins ruins the relationship between parents
the divorce rates rise from 12.7 for single children to 13.7 for twins, this is because of the extra work needed for twins and the father will have to be more present in the raising of the kids
'overall twins have less intelligence'
In a study twins scored about 5 IQ points less than single children, however this cannot be applied to all twins as a generalisation
how history has affected veiws
near the end of the 19th century freakshows went out of fashion, however during the 1840's freakshows hit a golden age, these shows would have included identical twins
throughout history twins have been viewed as both supernatural and frightening
during medieval times twins were viewed as monstrous or works of the devil
Nazi experimentation
Josef Mengele was a researcher of twins and people with dwarfism, minorities that the nazis didnt care much about.
Auschwitz- Birkenau memorial and musem website -
In the first phase of the experiments, pairs of twins and persons with inherited anomalies were put at the disposal of Dr. Mengele and subjected to all imaginable specialist medical examinations. They were also photographed, plaster casts were made of their jaws and teeth, and they were toe- and fingerprinted. As soon as these examinations were finished, they were killed with lethal injections of phenol to the heart so that the next phase of the experimentation could begin: autopsies and the comparative analysis of their internal organs.
why this should be recognised as not ok
from my own experience, people don't take this a seriously as people do with other commonly stereotyped groups.
I believe that educating people on this would change peoples opinions, or at least make people recognise this
personal experiences
when my mum found out she would be having identical twins, she spoke to a (find out who person was) who told her "there is a good chance that your twins will have low intelligence so you might want to consider that" and "higher divorce rates are linked to having twins" my mum had never been so angry
growing up I was rarely called the right name, as people didn't bother to learn who I was and only saw me as 'one of the twins' growing up I would respond to my sisters name as I found this easier than correcting people
every month, when conversations dry out people will always spot the difference with me and my sister, or see if we can read each others minds. People don't see this as a stereotype
identical twins in media
a large part of twin stereotypes come from how twins are represented in media, this media is consumed and then creates an internalised view on identical twins
