- - - - positive promotion - this is where you promote your relationship, talk about all the good things, post more
      - Sacrifice - sacrifice some of your needs, lower your expectations of what you want to get out of the relationship

      - positive illusions - create unrealistic views of your partner
      - deregation of alternatives - avoiding temptation, not going out as much, not going out with the girls, not being flirty
- - - - Sampling - where you are sampling people out (dating)
      - Bargaining stage - start to discuss what your expectations are and whether they can meet them (get into a relationship)
      - commitment stage - commit to the relationship and start to normalise the cost and rewards
      - instutionalisation - when the rewards and costs are set in place, at this point the rewards should be outweighing the costs
    - - Rewards are subjective to the individual - hard to measure what a reward is and what a cost is
      - removing the emotional asepcts of relationships
      - may be describing more business relationships, like colleagues rather than someone you love
  - - - they will do restoration of actual equity - this is when they will discuss with their partner to come to a solution
      - restoration of psychological equity - this is when you internally lower your expectations so you feel more balanced can sometimes lead to you becoming more accepting of your partner

    - - can be used in relationship therapy as a way to help the couple find the balance in their relationship
      - explains why people stay in absusive relationships - people are likely to lower expectations and normalise abusive traits
      - individual differeneces - personality actually plays a role in how much you desire equity in a relationship, got three types of people BENEVOLENT (loving, they want to under benefit) EQUITY SENSITIVE (people who want a balance) ENTITLED (these are people who want to over benefit in a relationship) - suggests equity isn't for everyone
- - - - intra-psychic phase - acknowledge they're unhappy, have to get to a point where they're like 'I can't take this anymore' before they progress
      - Dyadic phase - discuss issues with their partner, try to come to a resolution, when they reach a point of they cant come back
      - social phase - tell friends and family and expect them to take a side
      - the grave dressing phase - this is where you try to create a positive narrative surrounding yourself and a negative view of the partner
      - once you reach the threshold of each stage you cant really progress backwards, reach 3rd stage break up is final
