2.Comparison and Contrast
Purpose: Shows how two or more things are alike or different.
Common Comparison Words:
similarly
Similarly, my dad takes newspapers from the middle of the stack.

The Internet, in a similar manner, revolutionized how we get information.

The Comparison and/or Contrast Pattern
Definition: Points out similarities (comparison) and/or differences (contrast).
Example:
• Alike: Both spiders cause fear.
• Different: Tarantula is harmless; brown recluse is poisonous.
Other example:
• Boys and girls grow similarly but at different times.
• Boys gain muscle, girls gain fat.
3.Cause and Effect
Purpose: Explains why something happens (cause) or what happens as a result (effect).
Common Cause and Effect Words:

She became a vegetarian because she doesn’t want to eat anything with a mother.
as a result
As a result, only royals had birthday parties in history.
therefore

If the weather is humid, then wooden doors swell.

The Cause and Effect Pattern
Definition: Describes causes, effects, or both.
Example:
• Cause 1: Monkeys without parents drank more.
• Cause 2: Low serotonin also increased drinking.
Illustration
Purpose: Used to provide examples to explain and develop an idea.
Common Illustration Words:

A Final Point
Reminder: A paragraph may use more than one pattern of organization.
Examples:
