Creativity and Innovation in the Classroom
Creators are the future : : :
while things get more automated, a creative spirit and capacity for innovation are needs in order to succeed
“I call the age we are entering the creative age because the key factor propelling us forward is the rise of creativity as the primary mover of our economy.” -Richard Florida
this is true for your personal life and in the workforce... these are sought- after skills for those you want to sucessfully contribute
makes me think back to the 'why' behind the importance of the 4 Cs... the workplace and the word are shifting, we need more than just reading, writing, and math
"Creative people do not have answers, but they habitually question the status quo and think about alternatives and improvements. They discover and invent possible answers. They habitually ask better questions." (Marvin Bartel, 2014)
Creators work well with others
Students should learn how to communicate their ideas well with others to make these ideas come to life
often will work in groups and put their creative thinking together with others
need to be open to diverse ideas and perspective
Creators need to think creatively
this ties in very well with critical thinking- creative thinking takes thinking outside of the box
innovation is seeing old things in a new light, this is really just critical thinking
teachers should openly reward unusual and innovative work, even in crude forms, as these abnormalities are what bring about creative solutions
creativity means not just thinking up new ideas, but figuring how they work in new ways
students who thinking creatively learn to answer their own questions by experimentation... the scientific method is a great way for students to answer their own questions without having the answer being spooned to them
this creative thinking has to be encouraged from a young age-- and we cannot prune and limit it by enforcing 'programmed' ways of thinking in our classrooms
"When this happens many good ideas are missed. We risk injustice by manipulation. History is full of examples of leaders who have gained followings and supporters based on very defective ideas. When the masses are both educated and creative, mass tragedy based on false fundamental beliefs systems is less likely to take hold." (Marvin Bartel, 2014)
knowledge and skill + creativity is key
Creators will make mistakes
teaching students that failure is not the end, but a step on the road to success
ties to critical thinking- being able to reassess when things don't work... figure out why they failed and how to tweak/ try again
failure is an opportunity to learn
the innovative process is cyclical, lots of failures and tiny steps forward
Creativity can and should be taught
this does not mean "free for all" assignments or lessons, but limitations that force new thinking and ideas
as teachers, we need to be careful not to jump in and give expected answers- students need to learn the creative process by ownership that leads to the motivation to be creative
I think about the misuse of tools like ChatGPT and other generative AIs- when overused, they do the thinking for us and eliminate any chance of a fresh and creative idea
Imitation or repetition of what has already proven sucessful does not teach the creative process, its just regurgitation
students need to be pushed to create something new, need to be given limitations that force them out of their box
copy-work in art classrooms, even if some modifications are required, is a good example of how we let imitation become a crutch and try to act like it is true creativity
"Ultimately, every lesson is less product oriented and more for the purpose of learning the process of artistic creativity." (Marvin Bartel, 2014)
teachers should ask open-ended questions instead of asking questions that lead to certain answers, so that students can learn to think critically to fill in the gaps
image-flooding... can seem good to give an example, but can cloud and restrict the creative mind
teaching techniques and then encouraging students to implement them how they see them coming together can be a way to break out of just showing them the end result as an example
