a christmas carol
stave 1
-
-
-
fred is inroduced as a wonderful person and is there to shine a light on scrooges worst qualities and later in the book scrooge takes freds characteristics when he is reborn as a different person
we meet the portly gentlemen who are dickens voice they portray dickens own social values and again these characters sine a light on scrooges flaws
scrooge has old fetures and thin lips and thinks christmas is a time to loose money and he doesnt want to help the poor
we meet scrooges clerk (bob cratchet) whos name is not said until stave three this shows how the lower class almost didnt have a name and didnt matter in society
we see that scrooge spends almost no money on himself and he dismisses all of the warning signs (e.g. marleys face on the door) by saying "humbug!"
-
marley comes to warn him about the horrible afterlife he is going to face and marley asks the spirrits to give scrooge the seccond chance that he never got "you wear the chain you forged in life"
-
when marley leaves through the window scrooge looks outside and sees all the ghosts of the people who have the same punishment in the afterlife for not helping people
stave 2
the first spirit arrives and shows scrooge his former self as a child which is why he ended up the way that he is as christmas for him was a depressing time as a child as he had parents who left him in boarding school so he sees christmas as a horrible time of year and doesnt want to be reminded of it
fan arrives and takes scrooge away from the school- she was the only one to take him away from a horrible place however she dies in childbirth with fred which hurts scrooge so much and is also why he wants nothing to do with fred as he reminds scrooge of fan
scrooge also heads to fezziwigs party with the spirrit and scrooge seeing the party he sees that it is possible to live a life with both material and moral wealth-later in stave 5 scrooge emulates fezziwigs atitude and gives bob marles a rase and he sees he can keep his wealth and also be a good person
-
the spirit takes scrooge back to his and bells engagement when belle broke it off with him because scrooge became obsessed with money and loved it more than scrooge loved her and scrooge admits that he loved her less because of her being less wealthy than him
we see belle and her family - scrooge sees the life he could have had and the spirit forces scrooge to watch it to show him that greed kills love and that he could have had a loving marriage and a family instead he is lonely
-
stave 3
we meet the spirit of the present-he is a jolly man who has a sheith without a sword in it which symbolises peace
the spirit says he has 1800 brothers as there has been 1800 christmases scrooge says "what a family to provide for" showing how scrooge is still ignorant
the spirit takes scrooge to see the crachet family ans he sees how tiny tim is sick and miserable and scrooge now having seen his own sad childhood he takes a liking to tiny tim after seeing himself in him
the spirit uses scrooges words against him "decrease the surplus population" after he takes a liking to tiny tim to make scrooge feel bad
the spirit shows him all the fun people have at chrismas and shows scrooge how his own life choices have kept him away from all this joy and happiness
-
we see ignorance and want dickens is trying to symbolise how that humanities problems effect children and the younger generation the most they are deskcribed as monsters as they are dangerous to society and it shows how through education societys problems can be fixed - we also see how ignorence will lead to the doom of mand kind by saying "this one has doom written on his brow" scrooge is like ignorence and scrooge sees how ignorence leads to want
freds house shows scrooge that christmas is a joyful time and scrooge sees how he misses out and how while the poor fear and respect him some see him as a laughble character for the way he is
stave 4
ghost of christmas yet to come appears as a figure shrouded in darkness because the future is a mistery
scrooge fully accepts his new roll in society and asks to see the future where they go to the place scrooge usialy does business with and sees that in the future he is dead and that they are talking very bad about him and how no one is going to his funeral
they head to a beetling shop and is shown the poorest people in the slums and sees the worst that life can get for people and sees how poverty has robbed them of their feeling and happiness these people mock scrooge for dying alone and the way he was
he sees how his servants and sees how they are selling his old stuff even the nice shirt he was ment to be burried in and he sees how even though he is dead they take any chance to make money off him
-
scrooge sees tiny tims death and sees that people actually care about his death unlike scrooges death
finaly scrooge sees his own grave which is the last nail in the coffin and realises he will die unloved and un thought of
