Kakapos are endangered due to a combination of factors, primarily introduced predators, habitat loss, and low reproductive rates. The arrival of humans, particularly European colonists, led to the introduction of cats, stoats, rats, and foxes, which prey on kakapos, their eggs, and chicks. Habitat loss due to deforestation and land clearing further reduced their available range and resources. Additionally, low egg fertility and reproductive rates, along with the threat of inbreeding, have further impacted their population.
