India air pollution (case study of one country experiencing air pollution).
Causes and health impacts
Causes
Air pollution in India is among the highest in the world
99% of indias population breathe air below safe levels
This is due to emissions by motor vehicles, coal burning and power stations.
Indoor air pollution is a thing, as people in rural communities also rely on animal dung for heating and paraffin for cooking and lighting.
Indoor air pollutiion accounts for 1 million pre mature deaths a year.
In 2015, out of the 15 most polluted cities in the world, 12 were indian.
Health problems
TIny air particles released from burning fossil fuels end up stuck in peoples lungs. They cause respiratory problems like asthma as well as lung and heart disease and cancer.
Lung function on average in Delhi is 40% reduced
In recent years pollution levels have increased
National global solutions
National
National clean air programme in 2019
A year later progress was made in increasing the number of air quality monitoring stations
NCAP: part of long term strategy to tackle air pollution, setting targets of 20-30 percent reduction in PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations by 2024.
However, this is criticised for being non legally binding, and there are no reporcussions for doing so.
Progress that has been made:
14 cities building rapid transit systems to reduce car pollution
Restrictions placed on burning of stubble in fields, a major cause of air pollution in rural areas.
Chimneys of brick kilns have been retro fitted to reduce smoke emissions
Global solutions to air pollution in India
Annual 'world cancer day'. Pressed governments to take more action to tackle the disease.
Low emission zones: a potential solution which has been implemented in UK cities. Could be used in indian cities like Delhi to reduce motor pollution in a certain area.
