Plants
Key Concept: Plants grow better in nutrient rich soil.(Schooling a Monkey, Not dated.)
Activity: Science experiment where the children plant sunflower seeds in different types of soil where they can see and take note of which soil the seed germinates better in.
The Earth
Key Concept: Weathering and its Affect on soil erosion.(Generation Genius, 2025)
Activity: An activity tray with soil in it and a bottle of water. Here the children can pour water in one corner of the container and see that the water will take the path of least resistance through to the other side and it creates an indent in the soil. You can also add stones and plants into the tray and this will show that the water may take a different route, showing again how the water takes the path of least resistance.
Social Science
Crops of South Africa
Key Concept: Learn about the different crops that are grown in each province in South Africa. [Hanson, M.C, Löw, Fabian, Potapov, P. V, and Waldner, F. (August 2017)]
Activity: Sort different crops onto the map of South Africa provided. During this activity the children will sort the different crops by placing picture cards onto the province map where they are grown.
Traditional Architecture (Mud Huts)
Key Concept: Introduce the history and the tradition of Mud Huts as homes (Mmuo, C. 2024)
Activity: Explore creating your own Mud Hut out of mud. This activity will allow the children to explore the textures of the mud and attempt to construct their own.
Technology
Greenhouse
Key Concept: A greenhouse can provide the perfect environment for seeds to germinate and thrive. (The Seed Collection,2020)
Activity: Plant seeds (seeds determined by the season currently in) in the mini greenhouse provided and take care of them. The children will be able to observe the greenhouse in effect and watch as the seedlings grow before transplanting them into the garden.
Construction
Key Concept: Brick making plays a huge role in the construction industry. How are they made? Step-by-step process and information provided by Paspula, V (2019)
Activity: Make your own brick using the materials provided. The children will be able to make there own clay mixture with water and clay. they will form a brick shape and observe how long it takes to dry before it can be fired.
