International Variations in GHG (sources and emissions) due to Globalization
Trade Opportunities
The EU is a Trade BLOC that has free trade among its members and tariff fees on other countries - this makes short distance trading more prominent (but also encourages illegal flows such as drugs and narcotics)
Outsourcing
the shipping and trading process involved in outsourcing
--> an increased use of fuel and adds to GHG emissions to maintain communication and production control between the 2 countries
Global Demand
Need to increase production --> less sustainable and environmentally safe methods to extract resources
Globalization and Trade
Shifting to green technologies have helped reduce GHG emissions (but is costly and maintains mostly exclusive to
HICs
)
Increased trade networks, ports, hubs
--> increase demand for transport and fuel. However, physical environment also plays a significant role in the distribution of goods. For example, landlocked regions depend on coastal ports to finance most of their economic activity.
Communication tools such as container shipment, air travel and ground wire require energy and contribute to GHG
Industrialisation
HIC
higher economic development
--> more energy consumption
HIC more industrialized
--> more emissions
China (predicted to become an HIC by 2026) is currently the world's top emitter of GHG - this is due to business models like being a popular destination for outsourcing - as their cheap labour and resources are profitable but also contribute to material waste (as products have short usage lives)
LIC
Emissions are generally low - few industries + low demand for domestic consumption
Effects on LIC: less developed infrastructure development methods and laws --> more GHG and less methods to regulate it
NICs
Faced rapid industrialisation and economic growth via the use of exporting goods like China - emphasis on large-scale production will exhaust power sources like coal, and machines to produce goods
