NW by Zadie Smith
Race
We see Race as an important theme again in NW by Zadie Smith. The biggest portrayal of race in this story in my opinion is Natalie. Natalie embodies the things that come with trying to gain a certain level of success when you are a minority. White people and people who are in higher social class seem to think Natalie is "cute" and makes fun of her. We see this in her husband who makes fun of the fact that she used to go by Kiesha. We also see that Natalie isn't accepted by her black side and people from a lower class. This is seen by how Shar feels about and treats Natalie especially when she calls Natalie a coconut meaning black on the inside but white on the outside.
Class
Class is a reoccurring thing in almost all of the books that have been read in this class and shows up again in NW. We see Class as something to strive for in NW. We see Michele really fight toward this goal of financial and social freedom through wealth. We see this strive for a higher class in Natalie as well marrying who she needs to to get where she wants to go.
Femininity
We see the idea of feminine freedom within this book as well. We see Natalie trying to go to law school t become a lawyer and gain financial freedom. We also see Leah taking Birth control because she doesn't want to have kids. Things like this challenge the traditional standards for women at the time and opens the bounds on them a bit more.
