Grape farming

Activity: the learners will draw their own vineyards after learning how the grapes grow in rows. They can draw any colour grapes that they choose and in their picture showcase one process that happens in the vineyards, like irrigation or harvesting.
Where do grapes grow?
80% Western Cape because of Mediterranean climate, ideal temperature (‘grapes_prod guideline.pdf’, no date, p. 1).
Activity: each student will have an empty map of South Africa. They will colour and draw grapes only in the provinces that they have learnt have the perfect climate for growing grapes in South Africa, namely, the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
Technology
Drying rack - raisins
Discussing the materials of the drying rack and reason for needing it.
Activity: Making the drying racks with the necessary materials and following the directions.
Processing of grapes
Juicing - pressing the grapes, sifting the juice for impurities and bottling.
Activity: sorting and matching picture chart activity. The students will have pictures about the process of juicing the grapes. They will need to sort the pictures into the right order from picking to bottling.

Different types of grapes
You get different grapes for: wine, raisins and eating.
Grapes also come into many forms such as; grape juice, raisins, sultanas.
Activity: turning grapes into raisins. The class will use grapes and have an experiment where they will leave grapes on a drying rack in the sun and document the process of the grapes turning into raisins.
Definition of a grape
A grape is a bulb-shaped fruit (grape, 2025). They are a part of the berry family. "Some traits of true berries are that they have internal seeds and pulp, and the fruits develop from a flower" (‘The Four Main Kinds of Grape’, 2023).
Activity: the class will explore the theme table of the topic and have a chance to eat a few different grapes to use their senses to explore the fruit.
