BIOLOGY
Unit 2: The Diversity of Life
Eukaryotes: include animals, plants, fungi, and protists.
Protists: Diatoms. Amoebas. Slime molds. Algae and sea kelp are protists.
Animals: lack a cell wall. Consume energy by other organisms. Motile in the life cycle.
Plants: Traits are photosynthesis, multicellular, and alternation of generations.
Fungi: Some make people sick. Some destroy crops. First antibiotic.
Unit 1: The Scientific Process
What is Science?
Science is both a body knowledge and a process. 2. Exciting. 3. Useful. 5. Ongoing. 6. Global human endeavor.
Understanding Science
Focuses on the natural world. Relies on testing ideas and evidence.
Unit 3: Chemistry and Metabolism. Related to Unit 1.
Diffusion and Osmosis
Diffusion expands no energy. It is a passive process of transport. Osmosis is the diffusion of water through semipermeable membrane according to the concentration gradient of water across the membrane.
Unit 6: Cancer. Related to Unit 8: Evolution
DNA
Transcription: a gene called non-coding strand. RNA strand by an enzyme - mRNA.
Cell Cycle
Serious of events involving cell growth and cell division that produces two new daughter cells.
Unit 8: Evolution
DNA Evidence: common ancestor for all of life is reflected in the universality of DNA.
Artificial Selection: humans consciously select features organisms.
Unit 7: Genetics
How do we study human genetics?
Pedigrees: analyze the pattern inheritance of particular trait throughout a family.
Inheritance and Reproduction
Sexual reproduction. Meiosis. Chromosomal Abnormalities.
Unit 9: Biodiversity and Conservation
What is Biodiversity?
Measured at a number of organizational levels.
Biodiversity hotspots are geographic areas that contain high numbers endemic species.
Benefits of biodiversity: plants, human health, food, and medicines
Unit 5: Infection and Immunity. Related to Unit 2.
How your body fight diseases?
Immune has multilayers: Innate and Adaptive
