Topic 1
solids
Solids are packed tightly in a fixed position, they can vibrate next to each other but not entirely move. They have the least kinetic energy compared to liquids and gases.
liquids
Liquids are close together but have no uniform arangment. The particles are free to move. they have more kinetic energy than solids but less than gases.
gases
gases do not have a fized positions and they are free to move. They have more kinetic energy than solids and liquids

pure substances such as an element or a compound, melt and boil over a fixed temperature, however mixtures can boil over a range of temperatures

electrons
if an atom gains an electron, it becomes a negative ion (anions)
if an atom loses an electron, it becomes a positive ion (cation)
-
ionic bonding
ionic compounds have high melting points beacuse they have a strong electrostatic between oppositely charged ions that require a lot of energy to break
