Products and Processes
Social Science
Topic 1: People who work with raw materials.
Understanding value: appreciation of all the different jobs.
Key point: sugarcane farmers, factory workers and bricklayers play a role in the production process.
An activity: discuss with the class who does what and why their job is important.
Skills: understand community roles.
.
Topic 2: Use of bricks and sugar in daily life
An activity: learners must do a drawing of how sugar and bricks are being used at school and at home.
Key point: these products are necessary for daily life and are basic needs, i.e food and shelter.
Understanding value: responsible usage of resource and appreciation for resources.
Skills: link the product with its purpose.
Technology
Topic 1: Processing of raw materials.
Key point: sugarcane juice is processed by filtering, boiling and crystallising to make sugar.
Skills: the sequence of steps, communication.
Understanding value: understand the innovation of humans.
An activity: watch a video on how sugar is made, draw the process.
Topic 2:The making of stringer bricks.
Skills: to design and evaluate.
Understanding value: to be able to solve a real world problem.
Key point: bricks are made by moulding clay and allowing it to dry.
An activity: learners must make mini bricks, test the strength of bricks made by creating different mixtures with the clay, such as adding sand or grass.
Natural Science
Topic 2: What do we get from the earth?
Activity: learners must mould, touch and compare the difference between dry & wet clay. Test the hardness after a day of drying.
Understanding the value: to have respect of materials in nature.
Skills: to classify and to investigate.
Key point: clay is a material that comes from the ground. It is used to make bricks.
Topic 1: What do we get from plants?
An activity: Learners must examine the sugar and sugarcane by describing the taste, the smell and its texture. They must then record findings .
Understanding value: to appreciate plant based resources and materials.
Skills: to observe and compare.
Key point: sugarcane is a plant which makes it natural.
.
Inquiry questions based on both topics:
.
"What happens when we process natural materials?"
"Who are the people that process these products?"
"How do we rely on these materials?"
