White Blood Cells - Coggle Diagram
White Blood Cells
Types
Granulocytes
Neutrophil
nucleus with two to five lobes
the number increasing with the age of the cell
polymorphonuclear
10–12 µm in diameter
release
prostaglandins
increase blood flow and vascular permeability
allowing the passage of exudate into the damaged
area
causing inflammation
Secret leukotrienes
attract other phagocytes to the site of infection
life span of around 10 hours
can be shortened when they are actively engulfing
death of neutrophils in large numbers forms purulent
necrosis
Pus
Agranulocytes
Lymphocytes
Arise from the lymphoid stem cell line
Much of their development and reproduction occurs in the lymphatic tissues
second most common type of leukocyte
20-30%
Three size classes
large cells are 10–14 µm
smaller nucleus-to-cytoplasm ratio
smaller cells are 6–9 µm
larger volume of nucleus to cytoplasm
cells that fall outside these ranges at 14–17 µm
Abnormally high counts
characteristic of viral infections as well as some types of cancer
Abnormally low lymphocyte counts
characteristic of chronic illness or immunosuppression
including that caused by HIV infection and drug therapies that often involve steroids
