Unit 10 : Natural Disasters
include
Typhoons
Typhoons form over warm ocean water when moist air rises, creating low pressure, strong winds, and rotating storm systems due to the Earth's rotation
We can detect typhoons by using satellites which can take images of it up in space. The pictures will be able to show all the details that scientists need to predict its strength and course.
Typhoons can damage buildings, uproot trees, and the water can cause water-borne diseases like cholera and typhoid fever.
Volcanic Eruptions
It occurs when the pressure and temperature in the Earth's mantle is high enough to explode out of a volcano.
It can be detected with the same device that it use to detect an earthquake.
It can cause an ungodly amount of in the air, threaten the lives of nearby town people and cause earthquakes.
Earthquakes
An earthquake is the sudden and violent shaking of the ground on the Earth's surface. Earthquakes are caused by the sudden release of stored energy due to tectonic plate movements, volcanic activity, and sometimes caused by human activities.
We can detect earthquakes by using a seismometer which detects movements in the ground. Also scientists can predict them looking at past records in the area. The Richter scale is also used as a way to measure how strong an earthquake is, 0 is the lowest and 10 is the strongest.
The effects of earthquakes are devastating as it can destroy buildings, cause landslides, and aftershocks which earthquakes that occurs after the first one is over.
Tsunamis
They are massive ocean wave made by an earthquake that happened under the ocean.
It can be detected with a seismic sensors to monitor earthquakes, deep-ocean buoys (DART) to measure wave pressure changes, coastal tide gauges to confirm sea level shifts, and satellite data, with warning centers analyzing this information to issue alerts
It can wash away buildings, houses and wash the away the rumbles into the sea which causes pollution.
can be
Dangerous
They can be dangerous because they can result in loss of human and animal lives. Destruction to property and homes of countless animals
How do we stay safe?
Volcanic Eruptions
Stay in doors and hide under a table to prevent the ceiling to fall on you head because they can cause earthquakes.
Typhoons
During a typhoon, stay indoors, avoid flood-prone areas, secure loose objects, follow official updates, and evacuate if authorities advise.
Tsunamis
If the beach is having a very low tide, you should get into high grounds imediately because it is an early sigh of a tsunami.
Earthquakes
Run into an open area or stay under a table and make sure your head is safe.
