The loss of ever becoming a parent - Chapter 6, page 71, Kathy begins singing from a Judy Bridgewater tape, 'Never let me go...baby, baby...Never let me go.' While singing she, 'grabbed a pillow to stand in for the baby.' A guardian sees her and, 'she was crying'. The reason behind the guardians reaction is the fact that clones will never be able to become parents or have children. The clones' reproductive organs are removed in order to prevent the creation of children. Kathy is expressing an act of maternal care however she will never be able to experience becoming a maternal figure, hence the emotional reaction from Madame. Loss is conveyed as Kathy lost the opportunity to become a maternal figure when created as a clone.
