Race
-
-
He has lived in the same small town his whole life, Hamilton, New Jersey.
A goal from Banks chapter is "Reduce the pain and discrimination that members of some ethnic and racial groups experience because of their unique racial, physical and cultural characteristics." I think this goal could be achieved with the use of this book because it brings two characters with different cultural backgrounds that become friends in the end. Throughout the book, you can see Dillon bullying Joe because of his height and big feet and his quietness because of his APD. Ravi also gets bullied by Dillon but Joe doesn't see Ravi the way Dillon does. Joe wants a nice friend who he can talk to and eat lunch with. This book can show students and children that people's differences, race, culture makes them who they are and makes each person unique and we don't need to be mean or discriminate one other based of their background because that can hurt that person. The book shows how Joe was trying to be friends with Ravi but he didn't want to be friends with Joe until the end once Ravi learned more about Joe and as Joe says " There is more to me than meets the eye". I chose this because there is more to a person than what you can see and just because you don't know their culture or their background doesn't mean you have to be mean and discriminate but instead learn about anothers culture and differences.
Ability
-
Joe has Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), which means he has normal hearing abilities but the brain struggles to interpret different sounds and make sense of them.
In the beginning, Joe finds himself stupid and invisible because that is how he is treated by his peers and teachers. He feels frustrated because they don't understand his condition and his two best friends moved away so now he feels more isolated. As the book continues, Joe gains confidence and growth with his condition and himself. He recognized his struggles don't define him and finding ways to cope when he is feeling overwhelmed or frustrated. He grows his friendship with Ravi and show him he is not alone. He is very observant of his surroundings and has empathy for those hurt.

Age

-
Joe is around the same age as his peers but he is a lot taller than them. He often gets bullied for his height and has the nickname "bigfoot" given by Dillon the bully. He is always hungry and eats a lot which contributes to his rapid growth. One sencio that happened was when Ravi was coming back to his seat, Dillon tripped him but blamed Joe and Ravi believed that Joe tripped him when Joe knew he saw Dillon put his foot out.
Class
Joe's dad to quit his job at Walmart to become a truck driver to earn more money. His mom couldn't find any nursing positions in the hospital, so she went on unemployment until Albert Einstein was offering a lunch monitor position and she took it.
-
From what I can infer from the book, Joe's family is in the working class.
