A Tragedy: Faith vs. Unbelief
WHAT HAPPENED?
12 spies sent to explore Canaan for 40 days.
Majority report (10 spies): “The land is good, but the people are giants, cities fortified we cannot win.”
Minority report (Joshua & Caleb): “The Lord will give us the land. Do not be afraid.”
Israelites' reaction: Fear, grumbling, rebellion; wanted to return to Egypt.
God’s judgment: Entire generation (age 20+) barred from entering Canaan.
Result: 40 years of wilderness wandering and 1 year per day of spying.
WHY DID THIS HAPPEN?
Lack of faith in God’s promise and power.
Fear overrode trust in God's presence and past deliverance.
Rebellion against Moses and Aaron = rebellion against God.
Testing God despite His constant provision (Numbers 14:22).
Refused to listen (Psalm 95:7-11).
Lessons from 1 Corinthians 10:1–13 (Paul)
Shared blessings: All Israel had God’s presence and provision.
Yet many fell because of:
Idolatry
Sexual immorality
Testing Christ
Grumbling
Warning to Christians: Learn from Israel’s example, don’t presume on grace.
Encouragement: God provides a way out of temptation (v.13).
Lessons from Hebrews 3:7–4:13
Psalm 95 quoted: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”
Israel’s rest denied because of unbelief and disobedience.
Spiritual rest (salvation/sabbath rest) still available enter by faith.
God's Word is sharp and reveals heart's condition.
Call to perseverance in faith, obedience, and listening to God’s voice today.
A Better Response to God
Faith over fear
Trust in God's promises
Obedience, even when scared
Listening to God's Word
Encouraging one another daily (Heb. 3:13)
What Can We Learn Today?
Past blessings don’t guarantee present faithfulness.
Faith must be active and enduring.
Beware of hardening your heart.
God takes rebellion and unbelief seriously.
Encouragement: God is faithful and merciful when we repent.
Discipline = preparation for future purpose (Num. 14:31).
