- - - - Sand is gritty and drains water very well Loam is a type of soil that has coarse sand, tiny silt particles, and clay in equal amounts. Clay is made of very small sediment that packs together tightly. (Anon., n.d.)
      - Class activity.
        Give the class a bowl of sand, loam soil, and some clay dust. Let them mix each type of soil with water to form mud. Ask them to try making a 'snake' shape with each type of mud. When they bend the snake, observe whether it breaks, cracks, or bends smoothly. (Anon., n.d.)

        I will bring veld grass, lawn grass, and a maize (corn) plant to school. I will ask the children to look closely at the plants and discuss why they think all of them are classified as grasses. We will talk about the similarities these plants share
