PRODUCTS AND PROCESSES:Plants
TECHNOLOGY
Sub topic 1:Techniques used for processing
key concepts: Learning that technology is used to change raw materials into products we use
Inquiry activity: Learners will be shown the raw material fruit. Learners must then investigate how to turn the fruit into fruit juice without using machines or tools. The learners will then draw a picture of the processes needed to make it into fruit juice. These techniques can be squeezing using their hands, cleaning and cutting. After learners have made their design, they can communicate their different ideas (DBE,2011)
Sub topic 2: Machines and tools used for processing
Key concepts: to understand what tools help to process raw materials. These tools include crushers, moulds and ovens
Inquiry activity: Learner will be given a raw material such as fruit and pictures of tools and machines such as crushers and moulds. They will investigate what tools to use to change the fruit into fruit juice. They will design a picture of the different tools and what they will do to the fruit. They can evaluate which tools will be best to use and they can communicate their findings with the class. Skills developed are Problem-solving and Tool Identification (DBE, 2021)
Natural Science
Sub-topic 1: What we get from Plants
Key concept: To learn about the differences between raw materials we get from plants and the products we get from these plants
Inquiry based activity: Learners will investigate the differences between raw materials we get from plants. Learners will feel the materials and discuss where they come from. CAPS encourages the use of real-life contexts and practical activities to engage learners in meaningful inquiry (DBE, 2011).
Subtopic 2: Products and raw materials
Inquiry based activity: Learners will look at different raw materials and processed materials and describe how they are alike and different.
Key concepts: Learning about the differences and how raw materials change when they are processed
SOCIAL SCIENCE
Sub topic 1: Workers involved with products and processes
Key concept: Workers who help in the processing and delivering of products such as factory workers, farmers and brickmakers.
Inquiry activity: Learners will use skills such as communication to role play workers who work with fruit juice production this will help them to understand the roles and how the process works. This promotes skills such as communication and understanding roles (DBE, 2022)
Subtopic 2:How we use products in our lives
Key concept: Learners will be able to understand how products are important in our lives
Inquiry activity: Learners can walk around the class or at home and inspect what types of products we use that are processed. Learners can then discuss what they found and how they are used. They can discuss products like chalk, fruit juice, sugar, bricks and milk. This will allow learners to focus on their observation skills and application skills (DBE, 2022)
subtopic: How jobs have changed in factories
Key concept: To understand how with time different jobs in producing products became less of a demand
Activity: Learners can look at old images of juice making in factories and look at current images of factories. Learners will predict what types of jobs were used in the past and what these workers used to do.
