clean, monolinear strokes, rounded edges, and a contemporary feel
Modern Aesthetic: Its clean lines and contemporary design make it ideal for modern branding, web design, and user interfaces.
It has a consistent stroke contrast, contributing to a clean and minimalist aesthetic. The rounded edges add a touch of softness to the geometric style
History
Poppins was designed by the Indian Type Foundry (ITF) in 2014 and released as part of the Google Fonts library. Its primary purpose was to cater to the growing demand for clean, geometric sans-serif fonts that maintain readability while offering a fresh aesthetic.
What sets it apart is its support for both the Latin and Devanagari scripts, making it one of the few typefaces that effectively bridge Western and Indian typographic traditions. Just like the Latin, the Devanagari is based on pure geometry, particularly circles.
Each letterform is nearly monolinear, with optical corrections applied to stroke joints where necessary to maintain an even typographic color. The Devanagari base character height and the Latin ascender height are equal; Latin capital letters are shorter than the Devanagari characters, and the Latin x-height is set rather high.
Designers
Jonny Pinhorn (The Latin) :
Jonny Pinhorn graduated from Birmingham Institute of Art & Design in 2008 with a 1st Class B.A. (Hons) degree in Visual communication. That same year he was accepted onto the highly regarded post-graduate M.A. in type design at the University of Reading where he graduated in 2009.
Throughout this time, and continuing on into his professional life, Jonny has developed and indulged his broad interests in type design and particularly that of Non-Latin types. He now designs Indian typefaces full-time here at ITF, and so far has worked on Tamil, Gujarati and Malayalam scripts. In his spare time Jonny enjoys the often weird and exotic lifestyle that comes with being a foreigner living in India.
