- - - - Septimus Smith is a character who suffers with post trauamatic disorder due to his time in war. His condition causes him to have delusions of seeing his old wartime friend. He lives in a state of consciousness that absorbs every ounce of life, but in a way that causes him to fall deeper into his depression. In the end, right before his death, he fights with psychologists about his condition and decides to commit suicide as a last means to take control of his life. The addition of mental health can be considered a modern theme because, post World War II, there was no word for PTSD. This addition of a character like Sepitmus is very new.
      - Sally Seton is a character who pops up every so often but is a big part of Clarissa's life. She is Clarissa's old love interest to whom Dalloway describes her and Sally kissing as "the most exquisite moment of her whole life". This idea of having a character who is unsure of her sexuality and finds women attractive is almost unheard of, as the tolerance of LGBTQ people was not at the point it is today (Woolf, 35).
- - - - Cultural Identity
        
        Haroon Amir, father of Karim, is a man whose life has changed. He is allowed to embrace his cultural and spiritual values to gain something in English Society. However, Haroon doesn't pursue this opportunity truthfully. Haroon lies about his spirituality; he was originally raised as a Muslim, but when the occasion arises where he needs to teach yoga to people who wish to believe in spirituality, Haroon sells his culture to find a place in English society.
        
        Jamila is a friend and past lover of Karim. She fights her cultural identity because, as a traditional South Asian woman, she is expected to get an arranged marriage by her father. In an act of rebellion, Jamila refuses, which in the process causes her father to go on a hunger strike. Jamila is an object of the books she reads and is very progressive in her ways. She marries a man to stop her father from dying, but still rebels against him but never loving her husband. She doesn't believe in the traditional ways of South Asian families and finds a way to shed herself from the cloak that keeps her down.
        
        Karim Amir describes himself as "an Englishman born and bred" because he was born in England and has only known a life as an Englishman (Kureishi, 3). But even then, Karim knows he will never be fully English. As the novel goes on, Karim battles with his definition of his cultural identity because even though all he knows is a life in England, he continues to be labeled as Indian. He will never escape his cultural identity, and in certain moments, it breaks him, but as he matures, he realizes that he isn't just English, he is both English and Indian.
    - - Set in a more modern way London but in two different kinds of London. In the Buddha of Suburbia, the London shown is south London in an area that is the Suburbs, NW is set in Northwest London where there is a diverse variety of class structure with the majority of houses being council estates.
