Should students be allowed to use Artificial Intelligence on school assignments?
Thesis Statement
Students should not be allowed to use Artificial Intelligence on school assignments because it promotes cheating and plagiarism, may give inaccurate information and can reduce motivation to learn.
History and Background
Eliza was made in 1966 by Joseph Weizenbaum and was celebrated because it could have engaging conversations
In the early 2000s, image recognition algorithms were made.
The first thriving AI program was written in 1951.
Nowadays, we have easy access to AI such as ChatGPT and Dall-E 3.
Artificial Intelligence is traced back to the 1930s.
Hook
Have you ever wondered if computers and advanced technology would one day take over the world?
“What all of us have to do is to make sure we are using AI in a way that is for the benefit of humanity, not to the detriment of humanity.” -Tim Cook
Did you know that when you talk to Siri or Alexa or scroll through Social Media, you're interacting with Artificial Intelligence?
Argument #1: Using AI for school work can tempt cheating and plagiarism.
It can be difficult to tell if a student cheated or not; sometimes AI detectors can also be inaccurate, making the whole AI situation worse.
AI is easy and accessible to most and copying and pasting would be the easiest option for students.
Students often do not have the maturity to use AI as a good resource.
60.8% of college students have admitted to cheating sometime in their school years without feeling regret or guilt.
Specialized Information
AI has come into the learning community; many teachers use it, leaving students wondering if they can as well or not.
AI is now used in our everyday lives; face recognition, smart home devices, social media, voice assistants, etc.
Argument #2: Using AI for school work may not be effective due to some inaccurate information.
AI like ChatGPT were only told information up to certain years, meaning when you ask them about recent events, they may give you false information.
A research was conducted where ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity were asked 100 questions and a lot was false information.
The AIs were told to cite BBC as a source but when the journalists looked over them, a lot was inaccurate or false. 20% of numbers, dates and statements were wrong and 13% were changed or not even in the article at all.
AI has many inaccuracies in algorithms and research has shown it works better with white people and males and errors were a lot when it came to black females.
Argument #3: Using AI for school assignments reduces motivation and eagerness to learn which can increase dropout rates.
Students will stop attempting and their effort will reduce by a lot.
There won't be any "humaness" in their learning experience and interaction is very crucial for learning. This can also reduce their motivation and eagerness.
According to research, students may become reliant on AI, reducing their critical thinking skills and when tests and exams come, they are most likely to fail.
While conducting a research, younger people tended to begin relying on AI and have low critical thinking skills. However, older people still had strong critical thinking skills. This showed that younger participants - students - do not have as strong thinking skills as older people, therefore, they should not be using AI.
Students with poor grades are most likely to dropout. About 38% students dropout because of poor grades.
