Should cities offer free public Wi-Fi?
History and background
Australia is credited for creating Wi fi.
Scientists at the CSIRO developed the technology.
Wi-Fi's history began in the late 1980s with the IEEE 802.11 working group, develops the standards for wireless local area network.
Vic Hayes has been called the "father of Wi-Fi" because he chaired the IEEE committee that created the 802.11 standards in 1997.
Argument #1: Increased Risk of Cybersecurity Threat
Cybercriminals can set up malicious Wi-Fi websites that are designed to trap users.
Attackers can position themselves between your device and the internet connection. This allows them to intercept, modify, or steal data.
Many public Wi-Fi networks do not use strong cyber security making it easier for cybercriminals to steal data given over the network.
Hook
How do you know that your information is not being secretly collected while browsing through the internet with the public Wi fi?
“If security were all that mattered, computers would never be turned on, let alone hooked into a network with literally millions of potential intruders”― Dan Farmer
While Wi-Fi itself is considered safe, there are some negative impacts, including interference with other devices, security risks, especially with public Wi-Fi.
Argument #2: cost to taxpayers
Malicious software can be installed without your knowledge.
Cybercriminals can intercept data or introduce malware.
Malware can spread from infected devices to others.
Argument #3: slow internet
Without proper privacy measures and monitoring, sensitive information such as passwords, credit card details, etc over public Wi-Fi can be easily be taken
No effective data monitoring can allow cybercriminals to gain unauthorized access to connected devices
Data breaches, phishing attacks, or network abuse may go unnoticed, making it difficult to identify and respond to security threats properly
Specialized info
There could be very poor security making it more likely for your information to be stolen, even with good security could still have some risks with it.
Wi-Fi can be dangerous if shared with other people, expecially strangers with access to unprotected things.
Thesis statement
Cities should not offer free public Wi-Fi because it can lead to increased cybersecurity risks, malware distrubution and weak connections.
