        Narrators talk about Thomas:

        Rejected as minister of Salem. "Barley had all the qualifications and two-thirds vote into the bargain, but a faction stopped his acceptance, for reasons that are not clear" (14).
        
        Eldest son of the richest man in the village. James was his candidate. Had fought the Indians at Narragansett, deeply interested in parish affairs. Thinks himself intellectually superior to others, so was upset when James wasn't elected.

- - - - Paris was in Barbados with Betty, so it doesn't make sense that he would say it's gibberish when he traded there. Barbados is in the Caribbean. It's reasonable that he would recognize Barbados vs regular speech.
