One of the purest elements is sugar, a naturally occurring carbohydrate that may be found in nuts, fruits, and vegetables. Green plants use photosynthesis, a natural process that converts sunlight into energy, to make sugar. Sugar cane plants, which are tropical grasses that can reach a height of 20 feet, and sugar beets, which are root vegetables that thrive in colder regions, are the sources of sugar. Because they have the highest amount of sucrose of any plant, sugar beet and sugar cane are the preferred sources of sugar. The Sugar Association (2018).
