History
Hooke (1665): Cell theory - all living things composed of cells/come from preexisting cells. Biogenesis - Cells come from preexisting cells
-
Louis Pasteur: Disproved spontaneous generation (theory that cells came from non-living matter). Fermentation and pasteurization.
Golden eras
1st
-
-
-
Koch (1876): Bacterium causes anthrax. Koch's Postulates - specific microbe causes specific disease, germ theory
2nd
-
Bacteria genetics, gene expression, genetic engineering, DNA/protein sequencing, genotypes
3rd
-
Pathogens, antibiotics, vaccines, genome evolution
-
Microorganisms
Viruses
Acellular, RNA or DNA core, replicate only when inside living host cell
Core is surrounded by protein coat, coat may be enclosed in lipid envelope
Prokaryotes (no nucelus): Archaea, actinobacteria, cyanobacteria, eubacteria
Eukaryotes (nucleus): Microalgae, microfungi, protozoa
Normal flora: Normally present in human body, prevent pathogens
Transient flora: Acquired from environment, removable by handwashing (opportunist pathogens)
Reemerging infections: Newly appeared or rapidly increasing. Caused by breakdown of public health measures, new strains, or antibiotic resistance
Microbiology: Study of microorganisms (germs or microbes) harmful (disease, food spoilage) or beneficial (flora). Microbes are everywhere
Properties of life: Contain one or more cells, contain genetic info, process energy
