blind spot height & width
7.5 degrees high
5.5 degrees width
found 15 degrees horizontally
anisocoria
difference in pupil sizes
pathological - similar in bright/dim conditions
physiological
pupil stays the same in all light conditions
parasympathetic nervous system
afferent - photoreceptor send signal to optic nerve, which crosses over at optic chiasm and reaches brain
efferent - controlled by oculomotor nerve, brain sends signal to ocularmotor nerve which carries onto short ciliary nerve to iris sphcinter to constrict pupil
helmholtz sampling theory
there needs to be one unstimulated neuron (photoreceptor) between two stimulated neurons (photoreceptors) to be able to resolve an image
sympathetic
controlled by hypothalamus, signal sent to long ciliary nerve causing iris dilator to dilate pupils
