Altaic Languages, Bold represents living languages or branches/languages…
-
Bold represents living languages or branches/languages that evolved into living languages. Regular type represents dead languages or branches/languages that have no living descendants.
“Living” is defined as “having native speakers”.
Please Note:
The Altaic language family was once widely accepted by linguists, but general opinion has since changed for a number of reasons, and most linguists now regard the Altaic languages to not be one cohesive language family. In addition to this, even linguists who are of the opinion that the Altaic language family does hold true do not always include the Japonic, Koreanic and Ainuic languages in their hypotheses.
This diagram includes all of the proposed Altaic languages purely for the purpose of increased visual appeal. It does not endorse nor denounce the idea that the Altaic languages are a complete language family.
