Should Students Be Allowed To Use Artificial Intelligence On School Assignments❓
Hook
AI can learn and improve. Artificial intelligence can learn from data and adapt their behavior over time, becoming more accurate and effective.
“The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race….It would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever increasing rate. Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn’t compete, and would be superseded.”
— Stephen Hawking told the BBC
A significant portion of students are using AI tools for their schoolwork. In a global survey conducted in mid-2024, 86% of students reported using AI tools for schoolwork, with nearly a quarter using them daily.
Thesis Statement
Students should not be allowed to use Artificial intelligence on assignments in school because it limits their creativity and doesn't allow their brains to be challenged or engaged
by any activity and increases the risk of laziness in their future.
Students being allowed to use Artificial intelligence on school assignments is negative for their brain movement and can lead to restlessness, boredom, and a reduced cognitive function.
Specialized Information
AI use in schools raises several concerns, including the potential for cheating, decreased critical thinking and creativity, privacy risks, and the potential for bias in algorithms.
A significant 82% of students admit to claiming AI-generated content as their own work.
History & Background
In 1956, the term artificial intelligence was coined at the Dartmouth Conference by John McCarthy and others.
In around 1970s-1990s, due to overhyped expectations and limited technology, AI went through periods called AI winters, which is when funding dropped significantly because progress was slow.
The concept of AI began with early computing pioneers like Alan Turing who proposed the idea of a universal machine.
Around 2010 to now, we've had breakthroughs in machine learning, like more powerful computers and access to big data which led to major advancements in AI. This later led to voice assistants, artificial intelligences like ChatGPT, and self-driving cars.
1st Main Argument: Artificial Intelligence causes slow brain development
School is meant to help students grow and think independently, but using AI too much can make that impossible.
One major reason students should not be allowed to use artificial intelligence is that it encourages laziness and stops real learning.
When students rely on AI to write essays, solve math problems, or answer homework questions, they aren't actually thinking for themselves. This makes it harder for them to succeed in the future.
2nd Main Argument: Using Artificial Intelligence decreases critical thinking and creativity.
When we rely on AI for these tasks, we are less likely to practice critical thinking since AI is generating all the answers for us ,this can lead to a weakening of our critical thinking skills over time.
When we use AI their instant solutions to things can bypass our cognitive struggle that is essential for developing critical thinking skills.
The convenience of AI-generated information can discourage individuals from seeking out alternative sources, engaging in further research, or exploring diverse viewpoints which we need to strengthen our brain and thinking ability.
3rd Main Argument: Using Artificial Intelligence can cause a negative impact on future careers
The tech community has long debated the threats posed by artificial intelligence. Automation of jobs, the spread of fake news and a dangerous arms race of AI-powered weaponry is becoming a big concern.
Other negative impacts of using AI in college are privacy concerns, potential for bias, reduced human interaction, and job displacement.
Using AI to help you pass major courses like medicine or science can be extremely negative in the future. If you end up becoming a surgeon or doctor based on you using AI, then it puts patients at risk.
