HOW SUGARCANE IS MADE
- Crushing - The stalks are crushed to squeeze out the juice

- Grow the sugarcane - Farmers plant sugarcane. It grows tall like grass
- Crystallization - As the liquid cools, sugar crystals form.
- Drying and packaging - The sugar is dried packed and sent to stores.
- Harvesting - Workers cut the sugarcane stalks by hand or with machines

WHERE IS SUGAR MADE
Where is sugarcane grown in South Africa. 1) Kwazulu-Natal. 2. Mpumalanga. 3. Eastern Cape (A small amount of sugarcane is grown in the warmer coastal areas)
After harvesting sugarcane is sent to sugar mills (Factories) nearby. These mils are found in the same provinces where sugarcane is grown. Mostly in Kwazulu-Natal

TOOLS USED
Boilers- Big Mental containers or tanks where the juice is boiled. Purpose - heats the juice to remove water and make it thicker (concentrated)
Crystallizer - A machine that cools the thick sugar juice so that sugar crystals begin to form. Purpose - Turns liquid into solid crystals
Cutting Tools - Large Knives, Harvesting Sickles. Purpose -Cut down sugarcane.
Dryers- A spinning machine that separates sugar crystals from sticky syrup. Purpose - Dries the sugar and gets it ready for packaging.
Sugarcane Crusher/Mill - A large roller machine that crushes sugarcane to squeeze out the juice.
Purpose - Separates the juice used to make sugar from fibrous stalks. (called bagasse)
