Origin of the bun festival : during the 18th century in Cheung Chau island, the island was devastated with a plague and infiltrated by pirates.However the image of a local fisherman’s patron deity, Pak Tai helped drive away the evil spirits. People started worshipping Pak Tai and soon after the Cheung chau festival was held to honour Pak Tai.
