Imperialism>Cuban missile crisis- Spanish American war caused initial involvement in Cuba Imperialism> Reagan- without imperialism US wouldn’t have established self as a superpower- building empires to appear threatening enough/ economically well off enough to do such a big arms race
WW2- after Potsdam conference- relations deteriorating/ soviet sphere of influence- caused domino theory and so tensions w/ Russia which influenced much of Reagan’s foreign policy

WW1> Independent Internationalism- caused change in ideas- NYE

Reagan> WW1- dragged into WW1- whereas Reagan progressed- getting involved when didn’t have to eg Afghanistan
Reagan> Independent Internationalism- Independent internationalism couldn’t work when such a big superpower- Reagan used America’s resources to have a bigger impact- put USSR into arms race they couldn’t afford/ actively roll back
Reagan> Berlin wall saw to Berlin walls’ end- no longer symbol of containment

Woodrow Wilson> Independent Internationalism- contributed to Independent internationalism- sentiment of not getting into another war- LON
Truman>Independent Internationalism- set foreign policy for next 30 years- caused involvement in new areas eg Asia- seen as protector, II couldn’t work- already too involved
Truman Doctrine> Woodrow Wilson- progressed- now getting involved when didn’t have to eg Korea- WW1- pretty much forced in- Zimmerman/ Lusitania
Reagan> Wilson- getting actively involved-eg Afghanistan/ SDI
Truman Doctrine> Reagan- first idea of containment for Reagan to develop foreign policyto rolling back communism
Reagan vs Internationalism- Reagan used involvement to have more impact eg saw to end of cold war- wore USSR down-II couldn’t last

Spanish American War> FDR- SPA led to gaining of Pearl Harbour- led to much of Roosevelt's significant acts in WW2
FDR> Korean War- initially involved w/ Russia in WW2- Yalta- led to relations deteriorating/ Manhattan project led to McCarthur wanting to use nuclear weapons
SAW>Korean War- after SAW- got confidence could keep going with future wars- led to being enough of a superpower to be more involved
FDR>Reagan- manhattan project allowed for arms race in first place
SAW> Reagan- began building empire to be enough of a superpower to rival Russia w/ arms race
Korean war> Reagan first time actively pushing back

Truman> Vietnam- went into Vietnam on ideas of containment
WW1>Vietnam- able to make more developments eg build more allyships w/ Western powers/ get more trade- Vietnam soldiers fooled by booby traps despite good weaponry/ couldn’t get support of the Vietnam public- not progressing forwards? Or established self as superpower intervene before Vietnam
Reagan> Vietnam and Truman- actively pushing back
