WW1> FDR- WW1 caused changed mindsets - eg NYE- influenced many of FDR’s actions eg neutrality acts/ giving aid to allies while keeping out of war for as long as possible
WW1> Independent Internationalism- this approach= majorly influenced by trying to keep out of war/ maintain economic superiority after war also independent internationalism= temporary- involvement in Europe from WW1- lasting
WW1>Truman Doctrine- ensured involvement in Europe for first time which consequently caused further involvement in WW2 where relations with communism grew icier after trying to sort out postwar decisions eg Yalta/ also could argue caused first red scare- developed mindset for communism hatred
WW1/ Truman Doctrine> Berlin airlifts- WW1 contributed to Truman doctrine which directly resulted in Berlin airlifts
Truman doctrine> Independent internationalism- Independent Internationalism didn’t last whereas some of Truman doctrine's effect eg Asia involvement- CHINA WITHIN TIME- long lasting
FDR> Independent Internationalism- able to surpass this approach- convince Americans to go to war
Berlin airlifts> Independent internationalism- II didn’t last whereas airlifts helped ensure West Berlin not communist ever
FDR> Truman Doctrine- was involved with Russia originally- tensions started at Yalta conference

Kennedy> Eisenhower- Eisenhower recommended for the U-2 spy plane to be built and operated by the C.I.A. instead of the USAF - gave advantage in stopping Cuban missile crisis/ first to have open line w/USSR to stop issues in Berlin which JFK adopted
Truman> Kennedy- initial involvement w/ doctrine/ got involved with German first
Truman> Eisenhower- got involved in Asia first- without would have limited ability to create SEATO
Truman> Reagan- was first involved paved way for containment to start scaling back/ first to develop proper nuclear weapons- paved way for Reagan’s arms race
Kennedy> Reagan- can be argued millitary defense caused unnecessary arms race/ such a hard military stance made it hard to get compromises- prolong war- whereas Kennedy able to get USSR to withdraw
Reagan>Eisenhower- some of Eisenhower’s progressions eg limiting arms race didn’t last- Reagan completely backtracked

Imperialism>WW1- was initial involvement in countries that was gateway for involvement in WW1- eg Spanish American war- Britain gave collier/ provision ships to Dewey- initial interest
Wilson>WW1- convinced people to go to war- making world safe for democracy
WW1>Independent internationalism- was events of WW1 that caused independent internationalism- didn’t want to revert back
Wilson> Independent Internationalism- contributed to ideas against war- not joining LON- 14 reservations- people didn’t want to be dragged into another war
Imperialism < Wilson- Wilson aided initial move away from imperialism- liberalism/ interventionism
Imperialism> Independent Internationalism- Imperialism caused initial involvement in wars- caused people wanting to prevent wars after WW1
1930-1960
WW2> Korea- got involved with Korea due to containment- WW2 caused initial tensions leading to containment- trying to sort out - eg Potsdam/ after war Soviet sphere of influence- domino theory started to arise
Korea> Eisenhower- initial involvement in Asia led to some of Eisenhower’s developments eg SEATO
WW2>Independent Internationalism- interventionism won- WW2 long lasting eg formation of UN
WW2> Eisenhower- mass involvement in Europe= gateway to involvement with Asia WW2 reason for his new look policy- backed by containment which was caused by WW2
Independent Internationalism< Korea- failed to keep out of involvement with countries- now voluntarily stepping in for containment
Eisenhower> Independent Internationalism- getting involved- more influence w/ countries eg SEATO, opening lines w/ Russia

Cuban Missile Crisis> Reagan- Reagan had tensions with USSR but never got as hot as almost nuclear warfare
Reagan> Dente- Reagan Policy ended Dente- no longer trying to be peaceful- push back- new foreign policy- no longer just containment/ trying to avoid war
Dente> Carter -some ideas in Dente eg SALT I influenced Dente to do SALT II
Cuban missile crisis > Carter- failed to make much impact with rescue attempt from embassy- whereas Kennedy made lots of impact- stopping nuclear war through getting USSR to withdraw missiles
Reagan> Carter- Carter still following containment whereas Reagan revamped foreign policy/ Reagan had more impact on middle east- able to fund/ cooperate w/ Afghanistan and Pakistan whereas Carter= unsuccessful rescue attempt
1940-80
WW2> Korea- got involved with Korea due to containment- WW2 caused initial tensions leading to containment- trying to sort out - eg Potsdam/ after war Soviet sphere of influence- domino theory started to arise
Korean war< JFK - able to actively get compromise with Russia- whereas Korea-armistice signed 27th July 1953 but unable to get over parallel with compromise
JFK> Carter- failed to make much impact with rescue attempt from embassy- whereas Kennedy made lots of impact- stopping nuclear war through getting USSR to withdraw missiles
WW2> Carter/ JFK- began arms race which caused involvement with Cuban missile crisis and attempts to slow- SALT II- started idea of containment which he committed to-
Carter< Korea- certainly tensions between Russiaand Carter but nuclear weapon use threatened in Korea
