- - - - On the board I will put pictures of things from everyday life. Food, furniture, technology, materials. the students will have turns telling me if these objects come from a plant or not.
  - - - The earth gives us many things we use in our everyday lives. It gives us soil, sand, water and so much more. We harvest these raw materials so that we can give them a new function.
        
        this activity includes writing and drawing one thing that earth gives us on an A5 piece of paper. At the end of the lesson we will use presstick to put them up on the board to make "what earth gives us" collage.
- - - - This activity will be a short game of charades. 5 students will get a turn to come to the front of the class and pick a piece of paper off my table. On these pieces of paper will be "farmer", "brick layer", "packaging sugar", "cutting sugar cane" and "shaping bricks". They will have to act it out without using words. Others in the classroom have to guess what they are doing and what role they are playing in the design process.
  - - - this activity the students will be given white piece of paper and they have to draw a landscape of our world without any plants. No grass, trees, flowers etc. they will then have a chance to explain what they think about their drawings and what our world will look like without any plants.
- - - - as I live in Durban, I will find pieces of sugar cane. (with permission from parents) I will cut it into smaller pieces and wash them so we can all taste what it tastes like as a raw material compared to the sugar we buy in the shops.
  - - - using air dry clay, I will give them a small piece. We will then shape these pieces of clay into 5cm by 2cm by 2cm. Let them dry in the sun. Once dried we can paint and we have made our own bricks.
