Phobias
Behavioural, Emotional, and Cognitive Characteristics
Behavioural:
Panic: panic in the presence of the phobic stimulus - includes crying, screaming, running away, or freezing
Avoidance: anxiety increases in the feared situation so people will avoid any situation where they might be exposed to it
Disruption of Functioning: the anxiety and avoidance may interfere with the ability to conduct everyday functioning
Emotional:
Anxiety: unpleasant state of physiological arousal occurring in the presence of the feared object/phobic stimulus
Fear: often unreasonable - fear is disproportionate to the danger posed by the phobic stimulus
Cognitive:
Irrational Beliefs:hold irrational beliefs towards the phobic stimulus - resistant to rational arguments
Selective Attention: often look intently at the phobic stimulus finding it hard to look away - allows us to react quickly in case of danger - can interfere with daily life

Depression
Behavioural, Emotional, and Cognitive Characteristics
Behavioural:
Disruption of sleep and eating:insomnia (reduced sleep) or hypersomnia (increased sleep) - appetite can also increase or decrease which can lead to weight loss or gain
Loss of Energy: reduced energy resulting in fatigue/lethargy - high levels of inactivity
Emotional:
Sadness: worthless, low self-esteem, hopelessness
Anger: negative emotions displayed through anger towards themselves or others
Cognitive:
Focussing and Dwelling on the negative: view the world and themselves in negative ways - report unhappy events in life rather than positive ones - irrational
Poor concentration: unable to stick to tasks or make decisions - interfere with work and communication
