Factors Influencing Learning
Learning strategies
We can all benefit from interdisciplinary science of learning
Using basic learning principles and memory to be better learners
Learning is very complex
Learning involves changing the brain!
Changes in perception, taking place without conscious awareness. Sometimes doing it without even realizing we want to learn
Includes: non associative learning, classical conditioning, and operant condition.
Important: explicit and intentional forms of learning
Difference in Learners
Motivation to learn
Direction of effort, intensity of effort, persistence of effort
Dynamic! can change
Memory, reasoning, ability
Reading comprehension
Disabilities
Anxiety about materials
Theory of attentional control states that anxiety impairs the efficiency of mental processes but not the results and their accuracy
Time spent on social media is a theory as to why anxiety is on the rise in young adults (replaces healthy coping strategies)
Encoding activities
Incidental learning
Helps you recognize better
Intentional learning
Helps you recall better
Power of chunking
General Principles of learning
We can improve by self learning
Forgetting is good, helps unclutter memory
This is one of the important lessons for me by far. I have always believed that some people are just math people while others are more on the creative, and some are more on the science side. This lesson changes my opinion on that. It all comes down on how I can utilize different learning methods that suit me. Anyone can learn and retain anything. You must have the motivation first of all. I thought anxiety would deter me from learning, but studies show that the results someone with anxiety gets are still the same, its just that the mental processes are just a bit different.
I do spend alot of time on social media and I do see a correlation between anxiety and time spent on social media. Nowadays, for me and many, social media is an easy escape from reality and its responsibilities. Which can easily show why one does not know how to act towards their schoolwork and such. If you dont asses your time on social media, I can easily see it affecting your everyday life and making you form cheap dopamine, rather than getting actual dopamine from completing your work and such.
This lesson taught me that persistence is key. You cant expect to go all in one day trying to learn something and magically know it now. You must have persistence of effort. Persistence to me is doing it on a regular basis to really have it ingrained in your brain. I will definitely be using this to try to master some things I need to.
